Mphathi is a seasoned strategist, researcher and foresight practitioner. He started his career as a brand manager at Unilever. He has held various marketing positions at Warner Lambert, an American pharmaceutical and confectionery company and later South African Breweries.

Mphathi holds a Master of Philosophy - Future Studies degree from Stellenbosch University, a B.Com (Hons) degree from UNISA and a B.Com from Fort Hare. He acquired Management Education Certificates from Wharton School of Business (USA) and Howard University (USA). Mphathi has served on the boards of Arcus Gibb, Intshinga Investment Holdings and B-Line Advertising, amongst others. He is former director of the Black Management Forum.

In addition to business strategy development, Mphathi is passionate about Foresight and Scenario Planning. He has served as the Gauteng Province's co-ordinator for the COFISA Programme, a cooperative framework agreement for innovation between the governments of South Africa and Finland. He qualified as a Foresight Programme facilitator under the COFISA Programme sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology.
